Meininger: Mid-Summer before decision on establishing Public Safety Director
Scottsbluff Mayor Randy Meininger says it may be mid-summer before Scottsbluff makes a decision on whether or not to establish a new Public Safety Director position that would oversee all police, fire, and emergency management areas.
Meininger indicated on News Extra Monday the Police Department's great response to operating without a permanent Police Chief has allowed the city to look at the situation carefully and not rush into making a decision. Meininger says the city will take its time to evaluate data on how the model has worked in other communities and a decision is not planned into probably July or August.
Meininger says the change would have the Public Safety Director handle all the administrative responsibilities of the three departments, and allow those in leadership now to work more closely with their employees on the street. Meininger said if the city does choose to establish a Public Safety Director, they would take their time to transition into it.
