Croft debate analysis: 1st debate was "game changer" for Romney

WNCC Political science professor Colin Croft says while President Obama may have won the last two debates, Republican candidate Mitt Romney's performance in the first debate saved his campaign.

Croft says as you analyze who benefited the most from the three debates, you have to look at Romney because the race is now much closer than it was when the debates first started last month. Croft says Romney's position was sliding until his first debate performance, which re-energized his supporters and was the "game-changer" that has made the election a "horse race".

Croft says Romney had to battle very conservative candidates in the primary, and had to make sure he was seen as conservative enough for the Republican base. But during the debates, Croft says Romney has used the debates to move toward the middle in order to make himself more attractive to the full electorate.
