Manuel Alvarez, 93, Minatare

Manuel Alvarez, 93, of Minatare, passed away Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at the Golden Living Center. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 9, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. A memorial has been established to Minatare Presbyterian Church.

He was born July, 9, 1919, at Baxter Springs, KS to Rafael and Porfiria (Ramos) Alvarez.

He married Virginia Hernandez, on March 5, 1940 in Harrisburg, NE and made their home in Minatare, NE. Manuel and Virginia had 69 beautiful years together. Manuel retired in 1985 from Lockwood Corporation Inc., in Gering. He also spent many years working at Shalco Feedlot Inc., a construction worker, and also managed the Aladdin Theater in Minatare in the 1950s. He was a member of the Minatare Presbyterian Church. He was a foster parent for Minatare Elementary Schools for 11 years. Manuel will be remembered for his generosity and his selfless devotion to his family. Manuel was a master craftsman who was willing to help anyone in need. He also loved contributing with tamale making at Christmas time and playing Canasta on Sundays with family and friends. He also served as a school board member for the Minatare Public Schools. A favorite pastime was playing the drums with a local band.

He is survived in death by sons, Robert (Nancy) of Patterson, CA; Bill of Bridgeport; Manuel "Junior" (Carla) of Gering, NE; Andrew (Connie) of Madison, AL; Timothy (Lori) of Seward, NE and; daughters Rachel Alvarez and Arleen Olguin of Los Lunas, NM; grandchildren include (Dana, Rob, Kris, Theresa, Scott, Tracy, Jon, Brooks, Nicole, Ashley, Shanley, Alexia, Joshua, Jason and Tiffany); great-grandchildren (Vince, Jordyn, Logan, Jayden, Tara, Saije, Pierce, Jay, Tayler, Henry, Annamarie, Milo, June, Liannah, Max, Kendall, Ava, Levi).

Manuel was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, one grandson (Tommy) and his brother (Jesse).
