Positive outlook for N. Platte Irrigators
Nebraska surface water irrigators can look forward to not having water allocations in 2014. The Bureau of Reclamation is forecasting above average runoff for the North Platte River Basin. In the March first forecast from the Wyoming Area office, the Bureau is predicting total April July runoff is expected to be 985 thousand acre foot above Glendo Dam. Chief of Water and Land operations division Mahonri Williams says this is vast improvement over 2013.
The water loans that were taken out a year ago will have to repaid from storage ownership this year. With the current forecast, Williams says it anticipates there will be adequate water supply. The Bureau of Reclamation is expecting snow and precipitation to continue this spring. If the weather turns hot and dry, the forecast will be revised in the April and May forecast.
