Early childhood development to be focus of Harms legislation

Senator John Harms of Scottsbluff says he is working on legislation that would provide money for early childhood development. Harms says having children ready to learn reading skills when then enter kindergarten is one of the keys to education, and in Nebraska it is a problem.

Harms says 60,000 of the state's 160,000 children are at risk before they enter school and in Scotts Bluff County the statistics indicate the situation is even worse, with nearly 60% of the children at risk before they enter school.

Harms says he is still determining the specifics of the legislation.
