Masterton open to Police consolidation discussion
Scotts Bluff County Board Chair Mark Masterton says he is open to discussing combining police services with the city of Scottsbluff, and even including Gering and Terrytown in the mix. The Scottsbluff council Tuesday night asked their staff to look into the consolidation possibility even as the city moves forward in the next 60 days with a nationwide search for a new Police Chief.
Masterton says with the cities of Scottsbluff and Gering both experiencing vacancies at the Police Chief position and Chief Deputy Jim Gaspers getting set to retire, it's the time to discuss the issue of having one law enforcement agency. Masterton notes much of the research regarding consolidation was done two years ago when Scottsbluff and gering discussed the possibility.
Scottsbluff Mayor Randy Meininger says the idea is a good one if it provides better service and is able to put more officers on the street for the same amount of money. He also believes the discussion can take place as at the same time the city does a search for a new Police Chief.
Masterton and Meininger say the administrative structure is something that would have to be ironed out in the joint conversations.
