Gering couple arrested for shoplifting scheme

Two Gering residents have each been charged with shoplifting over $3,000 in items from the Scottsbluff Wal-Mart store following their arrest Tuesday afternoon by Scottsbluff Police.

Court documents say Police stopped a car shortly after Wal-Mart officials reported that a male and female had walked out of the store with a 60" TV and left in a red vehicle with Wyoming license plates. Police say there were three people in the vehicle, including a woman who was upset and told Sergeant Phil Eckerberg that she was living in Gering with the other two people in the car and they had been stealing constantly from Wal-Mart.

Court documents say the other woman in the car, 26 year old Kari Gauze, indicated that she and her boyfriend, 36 year old Elwood Church, had just stolen the big television and a DVD from Wal-Mart. She said she pushed the TV out with a cart while Church kept a lookout. A statement from the Wal-Mart loss prevention associate and store surveillance video confirmed the theft.

The documents indicate Police searched the couple's Gering apartment and found two large TV's, three DVD players, clothing and other items suspected as stolen from the store with a value of over $3,100.
