Mayo: Feasibility study needed to advance sports complex idea

Gering Mayor Ed Mayo says a feasibility study is needed to address whether a proposed sports complex is viable. Mayo was our guest on KNEB's News Extra program and said there is still interest in the project. But he says the scope of a complex and what is viable still needs to be addressed by an expert study.

Mayo says the study would determine whether the project, estimated to cost as much as $12 million if it includes an arena, can be built without being a burden on taxpayers. Mayo says he has had people call with interest about placing a minor league baseball or hockey team if the proper facilities are available.

Council members have been reluctant to approve even a request for proposals for a feasibility study on the idea, maintaining the city has other priorities right now including a library.
