Gering downtown redevelopment application approved

The Gering city council Monday approved making another run at a $30,000 planning grant for Gering downtown redevelopment. The city has been trying to get the state community development block grant for nearly a year, but previous applications have not scored well enough in the competitive process.

TCD Marketing and Research Manager Rick Willis says he has gathered more input from everyone in the community, and has included in this application specific action items that were not included in previous proposals.

Willis says once the application is received, state economic development officials will conduct site visits in April and May, and then award grants on June 1st. The grant requires a $7,500 match from the city. If approved the grant would be used by a consultant to do a detailed redevelopment plan that would hopefully result in Gering receiving up to $300,000 in state money to implement the suggested improvements.
