Harms says major tax reform needs more study

Scottsbluff Senator John Harms says he believes more study is needed before any major tax reform can be considered. Harms said Thursday he is not supporting Governor Heineman's propsals to eliminate the income and corporate tax by ending nearly $2.5 million of sales tax exemptions.

Harms says the proposals go too far too fast and he supports another bill that would have a committee or commission study the state's tax system over the summer and come back with recommendations.

Harms says eliminating the tax on social security and military benefits might help the economy. But he emphasizes the Governor's current proposals don't have much support, and there needs to be at least general support for any changes before lawmakers can seriously consider them.
