Area Firefighters battle two grass fires

Seven area fire departments were busy battling two grass fires Wednesday afternoon.

The first fire was at the intersection of County Roads 27 and D two miles east of Lake Minatare, where firefighters are beginning to do mop up work. The second fire was along County Road M and north of Highway 26 near the old city dump. Firefighters say there was a lot of grass burning with heavy smoke.

Scottsbluff Rural Deputy Fire Chief Paul Reisig told KNEB News he didn't have an estimate yet on how many acres have burned, but says this shows how quickly these fires can spread under these dry conditions, even on a relatively calm day.

Minatare and Scottsbluff Rural were the first to respond, but assistance was quickly requested from Gering, the Scotts Bluff County Airport firefighters, and from Scottsbluff City. Mitchell and Morrill were also asked to respond to the fire just east of Scottsbluff.
