Gering Native Wins Auctioneer Contest

A Gering native won the annual Greater Midwest Livestock Auctioneer contest recently held at the Valentine Livestock Auction in Valentine, Neb. Don Helberg took top honors in winning the top belt buckle and a $1,500 winner's check this past Feb. 9. The many time participant Helberg beat 30 other auctioneers vying for the title in auctioning off over 4 - thousand cattle in front of overflow crowd.

The top ten finalists included several Nebraskans - Kevin Schow, Paxton, Neb. (Ogallala Livestock) and Doug Day, Loup City, Neb. (Loup City Comm Co).

Valentine Livestock is the first auction market in Nebraska to host the Greater Midwest Livestock Auctioneer. The contest rotates among five states: Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska.
