Police Chief vacancies catalyst for consolidation discussion
Vacancies in the Scottsbluff and Gering Police Chief positions have the Scottsbluff city council Tuesday night once again addressing the possibility of consolidating the two Police departments.
City Manager Rick Kuckkahn said he will bring the consolidation idea up when he tells the council it is time to do a nationwide search for a new Police Chief. Kuckkahn says, "It's just a discussion topic. But with the vacancies there's an opportunity to give it the light of day and see if we want to proceed with it or simply go ahead with the hiring process."
Scottsbluff and Gering looked at consolidating the departments for most of 2010 before concern by Gering over a lack of Police identity and questions about possible savings thwarted the effort.
