Harms declines invitations to chair Appropriations Committee

There are a number of committee chairmanships open in the legislative session that begins today, including the Appropriations Committee. Senator John Harms of Scottsbluff is one of the senior members of the committee, but he told KNEB News he has declined invitations to be the chair due to health reasons and the stress of the job.

Nebraska lawmakers are preparing for looming battles over taxes, spending and Medicaid this year with a smaller Republican majority in the officially nonpartisan Legislature. The Legislature will convene today with 11 freshman lawmakers _ nearly one fourth of all members. That brings the total to 30 Republicans, 17 Democrats and two independents.
