Richard "Rich" F. Halstead, 79, Scottsbluff

Richard "Rich" F. Halstead, 79, of Scottsbluff passed away Saturday, March 2, 2013 at his home surrounded by his family.

His funeral service will be held on Friday, March 8th at 2pm at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel in Scottsbluff with Father Gary Young officiating. Interment will follow at Mitchell Cemetery with military honors by the US Marine Corp. Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 6th from 1-8pm, with family present from 6-8pm, also at Dugan-Kramer. At Rich's request memorials may be given to the Scotts Bluff County Volunteer Center Meals-on-Wheels program, St. Francis Episcopal Church or Prairie Haven Hospice.

Rich was born October 3, 1933, in Mitchell, Nebraska, to Muriel (Steiner) & Frank Dieckmann, later adopted by George Halstead. He attended Plainview Grade School and graduated from Scottsbluff High School in 1952. He enlisted in the US Marine Corp and proudly served his country from 1952-56. He was a drill instructor, MP and brig warden. After returning home, he served his community as a police officer in Chadron, NE & Torrington, WY, as well as a Wyoming Highway Patrolman, serving in Laramie, Wamsutter and Cheyenne. Rich also worked in construction and owned his own gas station in his earlier years and later in the trucking industry as a safety supervisor and driver.

He was united in marriage to Alice Faye Schneider on April 21, 1957 and to this union four children were born. Son Bradley Richard and daughters Richele Faye, Shanna Rae and Sheryl Rene.

Rich was a member of the Episcopal Church, volunteered as a Meals-on-Wheels driver for several years and was always willing to help a friend in need. He was never afraid to speak his mind or stand up for what he thought was right...he was tough but fair. Rich had a great way of telling a story and making everyone laugh with his great sense of humor.

He is lovingly survived by daughters Richele "Shelley" Bailey of Gering, Shanna Halstead and husband Joe Fuentes of Gering and Sheryl Spath of Scottsbluff. "Gramps" was greatly loved and will be sadly missed by his grandsons, Austin Arthur Spath of Scottsbluff, Caulin Ethan Halstead and Tucker Hayes Halstead Fuentes of Gering. Also survived by his sister Muriel (Jim) Parker of Scottsbluff, sister-in-laws Patricia Halstead of Gering, Wilma (Jim) Theis of Rapid City, SD, Linda Schneider of Scottsbluff, NE and Jan Spencer of Greeley, CO. Lifelong friends Larry & Caroline Vyvey, Lionel & Glenda Marshall, Irene Shields, Arnold & Lorraine Marshall and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his wife, son Bradley, parents, infant brother and brother Chuck.
