Teresa Leider, 57, Mitchell

Teresa Leider, 57, of Mitchell, went to be with Jesus Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at Golden Living Center in Scottsbluff. Her funeral service will be held at 10am on Monday, April 29, 2013 at the Mitchell Methodist Church with Pastor Juan Espinoza officiating. Interment will be at Mitchell City Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time at the church on Monday. The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers, any memorials in Teresa's name be given to the Scottsbluff Special Olympics or to the church. Teresa was the fourth child of Jake and June (Boyles) Leider born September 23, 1955. She was challenged with Down's Syndrome. At the time of her birth the public school system did not provide classes for the mentally challenged students. The ARC (Association of the Retarded Citizen) was formed, the parents worked with the federal and state government to provide education in the public schools. The first class in Scottsbluff began in 1963, after the ARC classes began in 1962. Teresa was allowed to start school at Roosevelt School until these classes were started. This class was transferred to ESU 13 in 1970. Teresa graduated with this class. She worked at the workshop to learn skills to help her in later life. At first she worked in private homes doing house cleaning, later she became the custodian at the Methodist Church in Mitchell where she remained at this job for 18 years, until she began getting alzheimers.

Teresa enjoyed cleaning the church because she said, "It made her feel closer to God". Special Olympics was an important part of her life. She competed in bowling, track and field, roller skating, basketball skills and gymnastics. She had the opportunity to represent Nebraska and the United States in the International Special Olympics in gymnastics at Nortre Dame in 1987, Minneapolis in 1991 and New haven, RI in 1994, winning gold and silver metals.

She enjoyed working in the church nursery and with her younger nieces and nephews also helping other people.

Her survivors include her mother June, brothers, Larry (Nancy) Leider and Jake Alan (Ronna) Leider; sisters Sandra Janes and Cynthia (Larry) Taylor; nieces and nephews Anne (Domonick) Peterson, Alice (Tuck) Fillingham, Amber Leider, Mollie Peterson, ShaeTaylor, Colton Taylor, Jason Swedberg, Nicole (James) Witt, Connor Witt, Adien Witt, Airman Jacob Leider, Rebecca Leider.

Preceding her in death are her father Jake Leider, grandparents Jasper and LaVange Boyles, Jacob and Rozi Leider and Kaylynn Peterson.
