Haley Cooper, of Oshkosh, Neb., has been awarded the first Nebraska Dental Association West District Scholarship in the amount of $1,141.

The endowed scholarship was established by the West District Dental Society with a gift to the University of Nebraska Foundation. The award is made available to students enrolled in the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry Dental Hygiene West Division in Gering.

The goal of the West Division program is to provide students with an opportunity to learn health care in a rural setting, with the hope they will choose to practice in rural areas after they graduate.

"Scholarships are a way of paying it forward," said Lisa Moravec, site coordinator of the West Division Dental Hygiene Program. "This scholarship program is a perfect example of investing in the future of the profession by supporting our students."

The West District Dental Society is comprised of local dentists from Valentine to Ogallala, Kimball to Chadron and surrounding areas.

Cooper will receive a bachelor's degree in dental hygiene on May 10 at the UNMC Scottsbluff commencement ceremony at the Gering Civic Center. Her graduation marks the 10th graduating class of dental hygiene students from the West Division.

The UNMC Dental Hygiene program accepts 24 students each year with four students receiving placement at the West Division campus in Gering. The curriculum is organized into a four-year program leading to a bachelor of science degree in dental hygiene.
