Eleanor Ruth Gardner, 84, Alliance
Eleanor Ruth Gardner, 84, of Alliance passed away peacefully in the presence of her daughter and son-in-law late Wednesday evening October 2, 2013.
Eleanor was born February 5, 1929 at her parents' home in Smith County, Kansas. Eleanor attained a Bachelor's and Master's degree in English Education and Library Science. She also studied extensively for her Ph. D. Eleanor taught High School English, Literature, and Library Science in school systems in Kansas and Nebraska.
Eleanor was born on the family farm which was the beginning of her love for agriculture and the land that she maintained throughout her life. She had a special place in her heart for farm animals particularly sheep and cats. Eleanor also really loved to travel and was able to see many countries and continents. Another favorite pastime was shopping; she would drop everything and grab her purse at the mere mention of shopping or a sale. Eleanor was a great believer in and supporter of education, she continually encouraged those around her to read and learn. Eleanor faced a lot of adversity and health issues during her life; she conquered her trials through her faith in God and an incredible amount of strength, courage and determination. She was a very devoted mother, grandmother, and mother-in- law. One of her primary loves and focuses especially late in life was her 4 grandchildren. She willingly and openly gave her love, time and support. Eleanor was a true joy to be with, always ready with a smile and kind word she will greatly missed by many.
Eleanor was a very active and vibrant person and was involved in many organizations throughout her life. A few of them are; The First Presbyterian Church of Alliance in which she was a Ruling Elder, Deacon and Trustee, Chapter AH P.E.O., Friends of the Library, Red Hat Society, United Christian Women, and Box Butte County Extension Club.
Eleanor is survived by her daughter Gina (Callan) Ackerman and 4 grandchildren Bridget (20), Shelby (18), Callan Jacob (12), and Nathan Ackerman (9) and several cousins who were very near and dear to her heart.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Virginia and Ruth, and her parents Earl and Zola Ormsbee.
Memorial services will be held at The First Presbyterian Church in Alliance, at 10:00 a.m., Monday October 7, 2013 with Rev. Dr. Stephen T. Roosa officiating. Eleanor will be buried near her family in Smith Center Kansas.
Memorials may be given to the First Presbyterian Church of Alliance or Prairie Haven Hospice.
