Vernon Leroy Hubbard, 80
Vernon Leroy Hubbard, 80, went to be with his Lord and Savior on April 10, 2013 at his home surrounded by family. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, April 15, 2013 at Central Church of Christ in Gering with Pastor Lyle Hinebauch and Bill Ferraro officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery in Scottsbluff with military rites by the U. S. Army National Guard. Memorials have been established to Prairie Haven Hospice or to Central Church of Christ.
Vern was born July 27, 1932 to Clyde and Opal (Hircock) Hubbard in Arnold, NE. His family moved to Bayard in 1933 where he attended Bridgeport Public Schools. He later attended Platte Valley Bible College in Scottsbluff, as well as a Bible College in Norfolk, NE. He entered the Army and served from 1953-55 during the Korean Conflict.
On June 30, 1957 he married Gladys Sauer in Bayard, NE. Vern and Gladys had four children.
In 1961, he worked for Whitehead Blaha as a mechanic. He then worked for Cannon Brothers Ford as a mechanic and later became service manager. He was forced into retirement in 1987due to his declining vision. Following his retirement, Vern and Gladys opened a licensed in-home daycare where they had the privilege of becoming "grandpa and grandma" to many children for more than twenty years.
Vern loved to fish and hunt and would often go with his children and son-in-law. Vern was also an avid Husker fan. He loved Nebraska sports. In his later years when he could not see the TV, he would listen to which ever sport was on the radio. Vern also had a green thumb; he always had a large garden. He was very proud of what he had grown and loved when it was served on the table. He was also proud of and cherished his heritage and ancestry. Above all else, Vern loved his family, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and took great joy in spending time with them.
He was a member of the Central Church of Christ in Gering.
Survivors include his wife Gladys; children, Vicki (Kurt) Weber, Doug (Lanna) Hubbard, Nancy (Wayne) Dillman, Jennifer (Ron) Eskam; grandchildren, Jessica (Wayne Bauerkemper, Ashley Dillman, Rebecca Weber, Matthew Eskam, Kenna Hubbard, Bethany (Hamidou) Conde, Andrea (Brad) Hardin, Nicholas Eskam, Kelsey (AJ) Kuxhausen, Cassandra Dillman, Keelyn Hubbard, Kaden Hubbard, and 12 Great-grandchildren; brothers Hershel (Betty) Hubbard, Larry (MaryLee) Hubbard; sisters Shirley (Don) Collamore, Joanne Keys, sister-in-law, Bessie Hubbard; in-laws Louie and Betty Sauer, Art Sauer, Dorothy and Fred Quindt and Virginia and Dennis Larsen.
Vern was preceded in death by his parents, brother Donnie Hubbard and sister Dorothy (Hubbard) Hauschild, and father and mother-in-law Louie and Mary Sauer.
