Smith: Mental Health should be center of mass shooting debate
Third district congressman Adrian Smith Monday said he continues to believe that gun control is not the answer to mass shootings in the United States.
President Obama is pushing for Congress to ban military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and is asking for closure of loopholes in the gun sale background check system.
Smith told members of the chamber's Government Affairs Committee that the mental health issues of those who are responsible for the shootings is where the emphasis should be.
Smith said we need to be very careful because there are civil rights and constitutional issues involved. But he added, "We want to get to the root of the problem and I don't think the root of the problem is the hardware involved."
Smith said he is "skeptical" about the President's proposal and wants to make sure any debate is "centered on the right things".
