Overman monitoring consolidation discussion

Scotts Bluff County Sheriff Mark Overman says he doesn't know anything more that what has been reported in the media concerning discussion on a possible countywide law enforcement unit. Overman says he was alerted ahead of time that the idea might come up, but he expects to simply be a source of information in the discussions.

Overman says the law allows consolidation under a couple different situations, including being administered by his office or as part of an inter-local agreement. Overman says it is not his decision and it is up to the governmental agencies to determine what is best for their agencies.

Gering Mayor Ed Mayo says he would only support a consolidation that has an elected official such as the Sheriff coordinating it.

The Scottsbluff council said they should at least explore the possibility with the county at a time when they are are beginning the search for a new Police Chief, as is Gering. County Board Chair Mark Masterton welcomed the discussion, calling it a "perfect storm" because of the vacancies with the two cities and Deputy Chief Jim Gaspers pending retirement.
