Decision on Bluffs public safety model expected in next 30 days

A decision is planned soon on whether the city of Scottsbluff will move forward with hiring a permanent police chief or move to a public safety director type of position.

City Manager Rick Kuckkahn says before advancing a recommendation to the council one way or the other, he will be visiting with public safety people in the next couple weeks to get their input.
Kuckkahn says he expects to make a recommendation to the council in the next 3O days.

Then he says the process of finding the right person for the position will begin. Kuckkahn says that will likely take several months, especially if the city has to define a job description for a Public Safety Director.

Kevin Spencer, one of two captains on the Scottsbluff Police Department has been serving as interim chief since the resignation of Alex Moreno last year.
