Another safe Oregon Trail Days is in the books and much of that can be attributed to the SAFE Ride project started by Gering Citizen Publisher Lisa Betz.

Betz says 204 people were assisted Friday and Saturday nights, and it could have been even better, but a torrential downpour sent people home early Friday night from the international Food Fair activities. Betz says once again the stars were the volunteers, with six cars out both Friday and Saturday night offering people rides home.

Betz says the law enforcement agencies including the Nebraska State Patrol were appreciative of the group's service.

Even with SAFE Ride, the Nebraska State Patrol handed out eight drink driving citations this weekend. Gering Police Captain Jason Rogers says they handled three or four fights related to Oregon Trail Days along with two domestic assaults.
