Maxine LaVerne VanderGriend, 83, Firth

Maxine LaVerne VanderGriend, 83, of Firth, Nebraska passed away at Heritage Estates in Gering, Nebraska, Tuesday , November 20, 2012.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, November 26, 2012 at the Pella Cemetery and a memorial service will follow at 3:00 p.m. at the Reformed Church of Firth with Reverend Jon Garbison officiating. Family will be present during the visitation at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, Sunday, November 25, from 2-5 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Reformed Church of Firth for missions.

Maxine was born October 2, 1929 at Adams, Nebraska to Andrew and Ethel (Vandewege) DeYong. Maxine graduated from Panama High School in 1948 and obtained her teaching certificate from Peru State Teacher's College in 1949. She taught grades 1-8 at School Districts #63 and #17.

Maxine married Wilbur John VanderGriend, June 5, 1950 and to this union one daughter was born. The couple farmed in the Pella and Firth area, retiring in 1990. During this time Maxine also did home child care to a dozen plus children that were considered family.

Since 2007, Maxine has resided in Scottsbluff, Nebraska.

Maxine is survived by her daughter, Karna (Randy) Kleager of Scottsbluff; grandson, Tyler (Brittany) Kleager and their son August 'Auggie' of Scottsbluff; granddaughter Leah Kleager of Omaha; brother, Allan (Thelma) DeYong of Firth; sister, Marlene (Dean) Johnson of Lincoln; sister-in-laws, Phyllis DeYong of Las Cruces, NM, and Millie (Leon VanderGriend) and her husband Meryl Schuster of Lincoln; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her brother, Donald DeYong.
