Senate Passes PNTR for Russia

The Senate on Thursday approved legislation that will normalize trade between the U.S. and Russia and allow the U.S. to take advantage of the trade benefits resulting from Russia's admission to the World Trade Organization. The American Farm Bureau Federation and American Soybean Association applauded the Senate for approving this critical legislation. Farm Bureau President Bob Stallman says America's farmers and ranchers will have more certain and predictable market access as a result of Russia's commitment not to raise tariffs on any products above the negotiated rates and to apply international food safety standards in a uniform and transparent manner. He adds that Russia's membership in the WTO will provide significant commercial opportunities for U.S. agriculture - including increased sales of poultry, pork and beef. ASA President Steve Wellman called on President Obama to sign the bill into law so U.S. farmers can compete in one of the world's largest and most promising economies.
