Richard "Dick" Swanson, 75
Funeral services for RICHARD 'DICK' SWANSON, 75, will be held at10am on Thursday, July 18, 2013 at the United Church of Christ in Lyman, Nebraska with Rev. Dr. Robert Smith and Pastor Cindy Bowker co-officiating. Burial will take place at the Valley View Cemetery in Torrington. Dick died on July 13, 2013 at the Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. Visitation hours will be held at the Colyer Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 17 from 3pm to 7pm. Memorials may be directed to the Lyman Church. Dick was born on March 6, 1938 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska the son of Paul and Sylvia (Briggs) Swanson. He grew up and attended school at Morrill, Nebraska; graduating Morrill High School in 1957. Following graduation , Dick worked at GID and farmed near Morrill. He married Katherine Gabel on June 2, 1962. In 1969 the couple moved to Huntley, Wyoming where Dick farmed for many years; while running a 70sow/swine confinement operation. While in the Huntley area, Dick coached women's softball. Dick also worked at the University of Wyoming Experiment Farm and as a ditch rider for GID. He was also at Hiner Implement for a brief time. After Dick retired from GID he helped set up consignment and machinery auction sales for Madden Brothers.
Dick was a 4-H leader and served as superintendent of the swine barn at the County Fair. He was also an Elder at the United Church of Christ. Dick enjoyed collecting model tractors; he loved having coffee with his friends, spending time with his dog, Max, and he really enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports.
He is survived by his wife, Katherine of Torrington; his sons, Mike (Susan) Swanson of Torrington, and Corby (Desi) Swanson of Shickley, NE; a sister, Charlotte (James) Giles of Loveland, CO; brother Don(Linda) Swanson of Sun City, AZ; four granddaughters, Nichole Swanson and Courtney Swanson both of Torrington; Jeannie Hatterman and Micah Hatterman of of Shickley,NE; and two grandsons, Josh Swanson of Gering, NE; and Wyatt Hatterman of Shickley, NE. He was preceded in death by his parents.
