Gering Police warn citizens of new scam
The Gering Police Department is warning the public of another financial scam tactic they have recently been made aware of.
In this scam, citizens receive a phone call stating they have won large amounts of cash and/or expensive vehicles. They are then instructed to go to a local store and purchase a prepaid credit card at return a phone call with instructions on how to properly forward the prepaid credit card information. The requested amount in these cases was $500.
The caller requests no personal or banking information, and claims to be from a legitimate and popular sweepstakes company. Gering Police say the lack of a request for banking information or a personal check makes this scam different from the majority of those they have dealt with in the past.
Gering citizens are urged to be vigilant in protecting themselves from financial crimes and as always, report possible scams to your local law enforcement agency.
