Gering Civic Center Celebrating 20 years
The Gering Civic Center is celebrating 20 years of successfully meeting and exceeding customer expectations in the increasingly competitive and changing industries of conventions and special events.
The late Irvin Rushall, local developer and visionary, built the Gering Civic Center in 1993 as a lease to own with the City of Gering, which has since been paid off by the City. The first event held at the Civic Center was a soft opening event hosted by Rushall for subcontractors; establishing the Civic Center as Western Nebraska's largest conference and event facility. The Meat Shoppe & Catering Thyme, owned by Rick and Judy Keller, has served the Civic Center as on-site caterers since 1993 and management operators since 1998. From it's inception, the Gering Civic Center has been a leading economic driver in Gering and the area; attracting over 600 events each year that includes state and regional association multi-day conferences and conventions, local and regional events, reunions, weddings and business functions.
"Our reputation as an affordable meeting destination, with exemplary food service and attention to detail in customer satisfaction kept growing over the years; and as the Civic Center became more successful, it was apparent that we needed to expand to accommodate new, larger and repeat business", according to Managers Rick & Judy Keller. "In early 2009, the Gering Civic Center/City of Gering was awarded a grant from the Nebraska Department of Economic Development's Civic and Cultural Redevelopment Fund; the City of Gering matched the $200,000 grant from funds in reserve from the downtown redevelopment funds to complete a structural renovation that expanded the Grand Ballroom with ability to accommodate up to 1,000 guests", stated Keller.
"The Civic Center is proud to share this landmark achievement with our many customers and friends who have supported the Civic Center over the past 20 years", accords the management team. "We credit this milestone to those who had the vision to establish Gering as a conference destination and the elected officials, citizens and customers who have trusted in us to host their business, association and personal events over the last 20 years". "But we don't plan to rest on the accomplishments to date; we will continue to develop our facility, our levels of service and community amenities to offer customers a competitive product that exceeds their expectations", stated the management team.
