Harms: Specifics needed in tax overhaul
Scottsbluff state senator John Harms says there are a lot of variables that might impact Governor Heineman's desire to eliminate income and corporate taxes by drastically reducing the state's sales tax exemptions.
Heineman says as much as half of the five billion in exemptions awarded to business may have to be eliminated to accomplish his task, but he says it is a needed discussion to grow jobs and provide the right environment for Nebraska's young people to stay in the state.
Harms says the federal government's response to raising the debt ceiling and the cost to expand Medicaid if that is the state's wishes could be stumbling blocks. He says a lot more will be known after those variables and exactly what exemptions can be eliminated are decided in the next weeks and months.
Heineman has indicated he will not advocate a sales tax on food, but all the other exemptions should be on the table.
