24th annual Spooktacular opens tonight

The 24th annual Spooktacular, a major fundraiser for the Riverside Zoo, opens Friday evening and runs through next Tuesday October 30th. Zoo director Peter Halladay says they have 200 volunteers helping with the event this year, many of them in character costumes. But Halladay says they could still use more people willing to dress in costumes.

Halladay asks volunteers to call ahead of time and let them know which night or nights they are available. Volunteers are asked to be at the zoo by 5:30 p.m. so they can get in costume and be at the appropriate location by 6:30. There are both non-scary and scary secions. The scary section for those 12 and older over will be by the big cat area this year. The maze is also back this year with a western ghost-town theme.

Spooktacular is open each of the five nights from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Admission is $5, cash only, with children two and under free.
