Gilbert was born September 1, 1934 to Arthur and Anna (Groskopf) Kurtz on the family farm north of Mitchell. He attended grade school at Haig and graduated from Mitchell High School. Gilbert went on to attend the University of Nebraska at Lincoln for one year.

Gilbert joined his father and brother farming and later worked at B&C Motors in Mitchell. He began farming on his own in 1959 and retired in 2017.

Gilbert married Patricia A. Kennedy in 1957 at Holy Apostles’ Episcopal Church and to this union four children were born: Jerry, Laura, Annette and Kathy.

He was a Great Western High Ten Beet Grower for several years. He was extremely active in his church participating in the vestry and choir and was on the Haig school board for many years as well.

Gilbert never knew a stranger. He could strike up a conversation with anyone and was always the first to offer help wherever needed. This especially made him an amazing neighbor and friend. He was reliable, honest and hardworking. Gilbert had a heart of gold and was thought of as a father and mentor to many people throughout the years. Although Gilbert had numerous outstanding qualities, above all, he was an extraordinary husband, father, grandpa and great grandpa. His family was his pride and joy and he will be dearly missed by all.
