Bertha was born on December 29, 1917 at Lincoln, Nebraska to Anna Barbara (Weingandt) and Philip Heinrich. The family moved to the Scottsbluff and Bayard areas, working as farm laborers and raising their eleven children; Bert being the fifth of the eleven. Bert was united in marriage to Ernest Kaufman on September 25, 1935 and moved to the family’s farm in Creighton Valley. Together they raised their family: Clint, Kathi, and Randy. Life on the farm was never dull, raising their children was Bert’s pride and joy.
After retirement, Bert and Ernie moved to Gering, Nebraska and joined Zion Church. In her later years, Bert lived at Heritage Park in Scottsbluff with granddaughters Heidi and Kris caring for her. She later moved to McGrew and lived with Kris and her family.
The highlight of Bert’s last year was her 100th birthday party that was celebrated at Chimney Rock Villa, her last home. Donning a tiara, balloons floating in the air, she blessed all who were able to attend on that snowy day, with loving smiles and sheer happiness, a great day! Grandma Bert will be remembered for her fierce faith, love, kindness, high heels with matching purse, princess nightgowns, and her defense of everyone in her family, to a fault.
Bert’s family was her world and she theirs. She is survived by her son Clint, daughter Kathi; was Grandma to nine grandchildren: Laura Baum, Jeff (Molly) Kaufman, Russell (Debbie) Kaufman, Heather Beguin, Troy Taylor, Kris (Shawn) Hopkins, Heidi Morrison, Jon Taylor, and Andrea Zacharias. Bert was also blessed with 16 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren. Bert is survived by her beloved sisters Laura (Al) Edwards and Clara Winchell.
Bert was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ernie, son Randy, and many loved ones too numerous to mention.
