Juanita May Burton, 89, of Bayard, passed away Saturday, May 12, 2018 at Skyview of Bridgeport. Her funeral service will be held at 2pm on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at the Bayard Church of Christ with Pastor Bill Ferrero officiating. Interment will follow at Bayard Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday evening at the church from 6-8pm. The family respectfully requests the in lieu of flowers, memorials in Juanita’s honor may be made in care of the church. Juanita was born November 11, 1928 to Ezra and Bernice Swartz in Kearney, Nebraska. She graduated from Bridgeport High School in 1946 and attended Scottsbluff Jr. College and Kearney State receiving her teaching credentials. She married her first and only love, Eugene Burton, on June 25, 1948. Together they had two children, Kenneth and Judy.
Juanita taught school at Redington, Hillcrest and Lisco. She and Eugene purchased a farm in 1958 in Bayard, NE at which time she quit teaching to raise her family and be a supportive farmer’s wife. She was always heavily involved in her children’s church, school, and 4-H activities. She loved raising a large garden and prepared many a feast at her table from the bounty of her labor for friends and family. One of her favorite hobbies was decorating cakes for weddings and special occasions for people in the surrounding area. She later worked at Chimney Rock Villa from 1979 to 2006 serving as the Activity Director and then Social Services Director. Juanita was a member of the Bayard Church of Christ and participated in the Dorcas Society, and served many years as a Sunday School and VBS teacher.
She is survived by her son, Kenneth Burton and Cheri Burton (former daughter-in-law) of Bayard, NE and daughter, Judy (Rick) Heimbuck of Slidell, LA; grandchildren Lisa and Traci Burton of Bayard, daughters of Kenneth and Cheri Burton; Julia (Michael) Kuehn and Jacob (Abitha) Heimbuck of Slidell, LA and Joy Heimbuck of Fort Gratiot, MI, children of Rick and Judy Heimbuck; great-grandchildren McKenna (daughter of Lisa), Auston (son of Traci), Brady and Rheece (sons of Joy) and Ricky Mae (daughter of Joy); sister-in-law, Ruby Sherlock of Denver, CO, brother-in-law, Merle (Nancy) Burton of Deming, NM, and sister-in-law, Dee Burton of Gering, NE.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Burton; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Floyd (Mary Lu), Howard, and Glen Burton, and William Sherlock; grandsons Steve and Chris Burton.
