The Scotts Bluff County Commissioners Monday evening approved three county keno grant applications totaling nearly $12,000.
Scotts Bluff Area Tourism Director Brenda Leisy and Karla Niedan-Streeks told the board the three grants will be used for lighting at the Mitchell airport, $2,500 to sponsor this year’s Old West Balloon Fest and $4,800 to fund a planning trip for the two women and two others to travel to Shreveport, Louisiana to get prepared to host the National Hot Air Balloon Championships in 2019,20, and 21.
The lighting grant of $4,100 will have an in-kind match for the same amount from the city of Mitchell that will help erect and install the lighting for not only the balloon competition but other events held in the area.
The Commissioners also approved adding $50,000 to the District Judges budget, most of which is needed to help fund needed court-appointed attorneys. Several of the Board members questioned the cost for the attorneys, who are contracted when the public defender’s office has a conflict, and the approval vote was only 3-2 with Board Chair Mark Masterton and Mark Reichert voting no.
