Commissioners hire separate transit and facility managers, creating additional department head

The Scotts Bluff County Commissioners Monday approved the hiring of Sheriff’s Deputy Travis Peterson as the new transit manager to handle the planned fixed route bus system that will replace the Handi-Bus later this year.

Peterson will assume the position July 1st, the retirement date of Operations Director Carol Prince. Prince, who managed the Handi-Bus  system along with managing the county’s buildings and grounds,   told the commissioners  a month ago someone would be needed to  handle just the fixed route system and do such things as train and hire employees, plus coordinate drug testing.

Peterson’s hiring means the commissioners have a new department head  because the the board also hired Jay Steinle as the new Facilities Manager ,  who will be in charge of the buildings and grounds.

The commissioners also have a big week ahead on their detention center remodel. Tuesday the Board will receive the maximum guaranteed price for the remodel from the designated Construction Manager FCI.  The board is hoping it is a price they will be comfortable with because if it isn’t, they will need to go through the regular bidding process.

Corrections Director Joe Gaul is also scheduled to be on a conference call with the state Jail Standards Board this week hoping to get final approval on the remodel plan. The state board has been asking for more information on plans for a new  medical addition and the administrative area prior to approving the design.
