Kimball will be losing a significant retail presence in the community as Shopko Hometown will reportedly begin the process of closing this month.
According to a report by the Lincoln Journal-Star, the Wisconsin-based company announced plans to close 39 stores across the country, including the stores in Kimball, Ord and Lincoln.
The website RetailDive says that on Tuesday, a Shopko representative confirmed via e-mail that the affected stores will begin liquidation Dec. 7, 2018, with the stores expected to be closed by the end of February.
Bloomberg reports efforts by the general merchandise chain to find a buyer have stalled, and says persons knowledgeable about the matter indicate the Midwestern retailer is making preparations for a bankruptcy filing.
Stores in Alliance and Torrington were not on list of reported stores to begin closing this month.
Shopko has previously announced closures of other stores – including in Gordon and Ogallala. Those stores are set to close by Christmas.
