It was a wild affair last night at Cleveland Field between the WESTCO Zephyrs and the Alliance Spartans.
In the end, a 13-12 win for the visitors in extra innings.
Alliance jumped out to a early 3-0 lead with two runs in the first off Z’s starting pitcher Creighton Dike with RBI hits coming from Trevor Dubray and Nathan Lauder. Their run in the second came courtesy of a RBI single from Caden Dean.
Against Alliance starting pitcher Trevor Dubray the Zephyrs got on the board in the second with a pair of runs; a bloop two run single to center from leadoff man Jack Jones.
The two teams traded three run third innings. Alliance got a big two run double from Caden Dean while the Z’s got two unearned runs along with a RBI single from Dike.
Then the offenses went quiet for the next three innings. All zeros in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.
That’s when this one got weird.
Top of the seventh and Alliance able to get two insurance runs off Graham Robbins. The half inning featured two hits, three walks, an error and some wild pitches and Alliance was looking to be in good shape needing just three more outs.
WESTCO needed base runners and three runs to tie; a single, walk, error, fielders choice, fielders choice, flyout later and the Zephyrs had scored three runs on just one hit.
Alliance got a key pickoff at second base to take the Z’s out of possible winning run opportunity with just one out.
We moved to the eighth and what turned out to be final inning.
Robbins walked the second hitter of the inning then a single and three straight walks and some wild pitches later the Spartans had scored three times.
They’d make it a five run inning on a two out, two run double from Cade Pfeiffer to lead 13-8 heading to the bottom of the eighth.
Mario Dominguez started the inning with a single and then Jack Jones doubled. Trent Richter walked to load the bases and that was followed by a two run double off the bat of Paul Panduro as WESTCO cut the deficit to 13-10.
Harold Baez then drove in a run with a single and Creighton Dike did the same. The Zephyrs trailed 13-12 and had runners on first and second with nobody out and appeared to be in a spot to win the game, but the runner on second stepped off bag and was tagged out after the RBI single got them to within one run. Two strikeouts later the game was over.
Creighton Dike was the Taco John’s Player of the Game for WESTCO. He finished 3-5 at the plate with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. He also got the start on the mound and after some early struggles, settled in and pitched into the fifth inning, allowing only 2 earned runs on the night and he struck out five.
Paul Panduro also with a solid night. He caught, he pitched, and he went 3-5 with 2 RBI.
Caden Dean and Cade Pfeiffer combined for five RBI for the Spartans.
Alliance improved to 4-0 while the Zephyrs dropped to 2-5.
