Scottsbluff High School senior Makayla Castro has decided where to take the next step in her volleyball career. She announced at a press conference at SHS Monday night that she is headed to Garden City Community College in Kansas.

"I chose Garden City because it is relatively the same size as the Scottsbluff-Gering area," she said. "And they have a male coach in Harvey Sanders. I have never had a male coach before so I wanted to try something new."

Castro said she had some other opportunities. She said she also looked at Colby Community College in Kansas and some private christian schools back east in the Carolina's but wanted to stay closer to home.

"I have always known volleyball was my thing," Castro said. "My senior year my coaches and I talked about furthering my career as a player and then hopefully coaching some day."

She said being part of the Scottsbluff program was fun. "I will always remember our team chemistry," she said. "You have to be a family before you can do anything. If you don't get along on the floor or off you won't accomplish anything and we had strong team chemistry."

Castro will play in the West Nebraska All-Star game Saturday, June 14 at Western Nebraska Community College.
