Kearney whips Zephyrs; Express lose too
Didn't your mother always warn you that there would be better days after a particularly tough day at school? Well, there will be better days ahead for the WESTCO Zephyrs, at least head coach Mark Moran hopes so.
The Zephyrs, who wrapped up a state tournament birth with first round win against North Platte at the Area 7 Tournament in Hastings on Friday, got walloped 23-2 by top seeded Kearney Saturday.
It started out as a normal day at the office for WESTCO. After Kearney had jumped out to a 3-to-0 lead after two innings the Zephyrs cut the deficit to 3-to-2 with a two run fourth, but then things just fell apart for WESTCO.
Kearney exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the inning and the bleeding didn't stop there. They added four more in the fifth and seven in the sixth before the game was mercifully stopped.
Kearney banged out 27 hits. They had one player with four hits and three more with three. Juan Rios suffered the loss. Connor Wilburn led the Zephyrs at plate, going 2-for-3.
Host North Platte topped the number one seeded WESTCO Express 8-2 at the Area 7 Junior Tournament Saturday.
