Gering headed to state for a third straight year

Josh Burgener supplied the offense and Danny O'Boyle pitched a solid game leading Gering Platte Valley Companies to a 6-1 win over Alliance Tuesday night in the championship game of the Class B Area 7 Tournament at Oregon Trail Park in Gering.

Burgener gave O'Boyle all the run support he needed with a two run double in the bottom of the first. The hit scored Grant Rimington, who walked, and Zach Smith who reached on an error.

Alliance got to within 2-1 in the top of the fourth when Darrin Bottger delivered a run scoring single. The Spartans, though, left the bases loaded.

Gering put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fifth with a four run inning. Burgener delivered the big hit again with a two-run single. Gering added two more runs after Burgener's blow on a sacrifice fly by Colin Chatterton and a run scoring single by Reggie Reyes.

O'Boyle was solid on the hill, working out of several jams, while scattering ten hits, walking two and striking out four. Alliance had its first two batter single in the seventh inning, but O'Boyle retired the next three to nail down the win. Centerfielder Nate Marquez made a diving catch on the warning track to record the third out.

Gering will head to the Class B state tournament in Wahoo with a 26-19 record. It will be Gering's third straight trip to the state tournament.

Alliance's season ended at 15-18.
