7th inning rally lifts Gering to district win
It looked like the Gering High Bulldogs would have their softball season come to an end this afternoon against Cozad in a losers bracket game at the B6 District Softball Tournament in North Platte. However, the Bulldogs overcame a 6-2 seventh inning deficit to win 7-6 on a walk-off two run homer by Jessica Rogers.
All of the damage came with two down for the Bulldogs. Mikayla Butler led off the inning with a bases on balls. Chelcey Mannal was a courtesy runner for Butler and was erased on a fielders choice by Shelby Schanaman. Isabel Wolf followed with a flyball out, and then the fireworks started.
Jacey Marrieta singled to put two runners aboard then Alli Wilson followed with a three-run home run. That got Gering to within one run. Then Cierra Booker hit her fourth triple of the tournament to give a chance to Gering's top hitter Jessica Rogers. The junior, who will be moving to Lincoln with her family after the season, launched the winning blow over the center field fence.
Gering struck first in the game, scoring a run in the bottom of the first. Isabel Thompson led off the inning with a double, then came around to score when Cierra Booker reached on an error.
The Haymakers tied the game in the top of the second inning using two singles sandwiched around a walk to score.
Emily Reyes gave Cozad the lead for good in the top of the third with a two run homer. Three more runs in the top of the fifth put the Haymakers up 6-1.
Gering added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning prior to the seventh inning heroics.
Alexa Longoria pitched the final two and one third innings in relief of Butler to register the win for Gering.
The Bulldogs recorded their 20th win in 28 games to stay alive. They have to win three more games to win the district title.
