Moreno explodes in Bearcat come from behind win

The only score that counts is the final one. The Scottsbluff boys basketball team took that to heart Saturday night in Sidney. The Cats didn't take their first lead in the game until the 1:38 mark of the fourth quarter.

A three point field goal by senior Eric Moreno gave Scottsbluff a 48-to-47 lead. Moreno added four more points in the final minute and one half of the game that left a near capacity crowd on the edge of its seats before the Bearcats pulled out a 54-to-50 win at the Cabela's Activities Center.

Moreno paced Scottsbluff with 27 points, 26 of them in the second half. The Bearcats needed every single point to post the come from behind win against the pesky Red Raiders.

Scottsbluff, who had only scored 14 points in the last three quarters in a 55-33 loss at Gering last Saturday night, struggled early against Sidney. The Red Raiders jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the first quarter. The Cats managed to comeback to within 13-to-7 at the end of the period.

Scottsbluff outscored Sidney 16-to-13 in the second quarter but never led heading into halftime. Scottsbluff again outscored Sidney by one in the third quarter, but could not take a lead. The state's fourth rated Class B team, according to the Omaha World Herald, got to within one point on four different occasions but could not overtake the Red Raiders.

The Cats got to within one twice in the fourth quarter before Moreno finally got them over the hump. Moreno had 11 of the teams 13 points in the third quarter and had 15 of the 18 tallies in the final stanza. Moreno was named the KNEB Taco John's Player of the Game.

Scottsbluff is now 13-3 on the season. Sidney drops to 11-5. They will turnaround and face one another again this Thursday in Scottsbluff.
