Zephyrs take three Sunday
Coach Mark Moran said a three game day is not unheard of, but it hasn't happened many times in his long tenure with the WESTCO Zephyrs. Sunday was one of those rare occasions.
Because of the rain storm Saturday night the Zephyrs game with Poudre Valley of Fort Collins was suspended and a second game with Platte Valley Companies of Gering was postponed. PVC agreed to play Sunday, and Poudre Valley was already scheduled for a single game with the Zephyrs.
That added up to a three game day. It was a short work day though for the Zephyrs they won all three games by the ten run rule in five innings.
Leighton Freeze won the opener 10-0. Beau Lofink also earned a second game win against Poudre Valley, 10-0. Eric Moreno picked up the win in the third game against PVC 12-2.
Moreno moved to 5-1 on the year with his win. The all-time strike out king in Zephyr history added 11 to his total Sunday. He also moved into a four-way tie for all-time wins with 24.
Moreno fired a four-hitter, but two of those hits, along with a bases on balls, came in the first inning when Gering struck for two runs on a double by Caleb Geary.
The Zephyrs bounced back and took the lead with three runs in the bottom half of the inning against PVC pitcher Elijah Timblin.
Another noteworthy milestone came for Zephyr coach Moran. The second win of the day was Moran's 750th in his career.
The Z's moved to 20-10 on the season, while Poudre Valley dropped to 3-14 and Gering fell to 7-15.
WESTCO has a single nine inning game at Gillette Tuesday. They will play two at Rapid City on Wednesday. Next action for Gering is a home contest with Alliance Tuesday.
