Fall ball underway at CSC

CHADRON – The Chadron State College football team had a successful opening day of practice Thursday in Chadron.

The Eagles, who finished the 2011 season with a 6-5 record and were picked to finish third in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference by the coaches in the preseason poll earlier this week, conducted a variety of tests before taking to the field in the afternoon for their first official practice.

The team, which consists of 129 student-athletes, started the day with an early breakfast before dividing into offensive and defensive segments for walkthroughs and strength tests.

Following lunch, the team had meetings and then practiced with helmets on at 3 p.m.

"The returning guys know what we expect of them and I was pleased with how they led by example today," head coach Jay Long said. "I know everyone involved with the program was excited when the day began and we got a lot accomplished today."

Chadron State will practice with helmets again on Friday but will go half rack Saturday and Sunday.

The first day of practice in full pads is slated for Monday.

The Eagles will begin their 2012 campaign Aug. 30 when they play at Montana State in Bozeman.

The Eagles will then play their next two games on the road before making their home debut Sept. 22 against Western State.

Chadron State could develop into road warriors this season. Seven of their 11 games are on the road, including trips to Texas, Montana and New Mexico.
