Beatrice tops Gering 5-1

After two straight come-from-behind wins at home the Gering Platte Valley Companies team couldn't pull off another one on the road Thursday night, falling 5-1 to Beatrice in their first game of the Crete Tournament.

Doug Jones' team gave it a good try. They loaded the bases in the top of the seventh but Nate Marquez hit into a fielders choice that forced Colin Chatterton at home plate to end the contest.

Chatterton, the hero of Gering's Wednesday night 12-9 comeback win over Wheatland, singled with one out. Austin Ferguson followed with another single. Then with two outs Walker Britsch walked bringing Marquez to the plate.

Beatrice jumped out to a 2-0 lead with single runs in the second and third innings. Gering cut the lead to 2-1 with a run in the top of the fourth. Losing pitcher Zach Smith led off with a triple and scored on a ground out by catcher Josh Bergener.

Beatrice rounded out the scoring with three runs in the fifth.

Gering drops to 12-9 on the season. Their game with Pleasant Dale was rained out Thursday night. That game will be made-up Saturday morning at 8 a.m. Platte Valley Companies will also play Elkhorn Mt. Michael on Saturday and a single game Sunday against an opponent yet to be determined.
