Alliance battles back to top Gering

Alliance came to Gering Tuesday night to play volleyball against the host Bulldogs for third time in four days. The two teams met both Friday and Saturday during the Twin Cities Volleyball Invitational. They also met the first weekend of the season when Gering hosted the Bulldog Triangular, which also included North Platte.

In those three meetings Alliance won all three matches in six straight sets. Tuesday was somewhat of a different story. Gering captured the first two sets against Alliance 25-21 and 25-19, but Alliance came back to capture the final three, 25-13, 26-24 and 15-9, to get their fourth win of the season against Craig Schadwinkel's crew.

"Even though we lost the girls have come a long way," he said. "Our first two sets were outstanding and we battled back in the fourth and were that close to wrapping up the win."

Just like in set three Alliance jumped out to a big lead in the fourth set but Gering battled back. After trailing 23-13 Gering tied the score at 24-24 before Alliance scored the final two points to pull out the win and force the deciding fifth set.

Schadwinkel was pleased with a number of his players including junior Savannah Walker, who was named the KNEB Taco John's Player of the Game for Gering.

"Savannah hit the ball extremely well tonight," Schadwinkel said. "She played hard. Our whole team did. We'll just try to keep getting better."

With the loss to Alliance it looks as if Gering will be matched up with the Bulldogs again this Saturday at the Western Conference Tournament in Alliance.

"It's just the way the schedule has worked out," Schadwinkel said. "I guess it will save me some scouting time."
