State wrestling underway

Gering senior Elijah Timblin is hoping for this pose a lot this weekend.

The Nebraska State Wrestling Tournament gets underway this morning at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha. Class B and C competitors get things started at 8:30 MT.

Scottsbluff should be a top contender in Class B. The state's second rated dual team is represented in Omaha by five district champs and nine overall wrestlers.

Senior Colton Adams shoots for a fourth straight state title. As a freshman he won at 112. As a sophomre he captured the 126-pound title and last year he won the 132 division. This year the 145-pounder enters competition with a 46-2 record. He is the all-time wins and pins leader at SHS.

Keegan Hessler is also a returning champ for the Bearcats. Hessler won at 113 last season. This year he competes at 126. Two other returning state placers from last year are Sabian Harsh and Andrew Aratani. Harsh was third at 145 last season and wrestles at 160 this season. Aratani placed fifth at 285 last campaign and returns in the same division.

Gering has three wrestlers competing including Baily Hort who placed third at 132 last year. He returns in that weight class this season.

Bayard, Bridgeport and Mitchell all have a placer from last year's meet returning to Omaha. Bayard's Tanner Willey was fifth last year at 195. He enters competition today in the same weight classs with a 29-4 record.

Brandon Nichols returns for Bridgeport. He was fourth at 138 last year. This season he competes at 145. Drew Gilliland is the returning medal winner for Mitchell. He was fifth last year at 106. The sophomore is 31-2 at 113 this season.

In Class D Hay Springs qualified two returning medal winners this year. 138-pounder Joey Johnson will try to improve on his 6th place finish at 132 last year, and teammate Stivin Horrocks returns at 220, where he finished third a year ago.
