Cougar baseball team outscored in extra innings

Michaud goes deep twice for the Cougars

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Alex Michaud had two home runs including a grand slam, but it wasn't enough as Glendale Community College came back to drop Western Nebraska Community College 9-8 in 10 innings Monday during the Cougars' Spring Break trip in Arizona.

WNCC had plenty of offensive power, finishing with 10 hits, including a 3-for-4 night from Michaud. Michaud finished with two home runs, five RBIs, and two runs scored in the heart-breaking loss.

WNCC also received a multi-hit game from Cameron Snyder, who went 2-for-5 with a run scored and RBI. The only other extra base hit came from Ryan Bender with a triple.

The game was scoreless through five innings before WNCC broke through as Michaud put WNCC up 1-0 with a home run.

After Glendale tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, WNCC pushed the lead to 6-1 in the seventh and they did it all with two outs. Zach Ostergard got things started by drawing a walk and then scored on a single by Snyder. WNCC then loaded the bases and Michaud sent the first pitch over the centerfield fence for a grand slam.

Glendale sliced the lead to 6-3 with two runs in the bottom of the seventh and three in the eighth to tie the game. WNCC had an opportunity to go ahead in the ninth as Gabriel DeLa Rosa walked and Snyder singled. A double play erased two runners. Michaud was then intentionally walked but the runners were left stranded.

The Cougars went up 8-6 in the top of the 10th as Pablo Garcia was hit by a pitch and then Keeton was walked. Both runners scored off a single by Ostergard and a sacrifice fly by DeLa Rosa.

Glendale came back to win the game in the bottom of the inning as Glendale tied the game on a 2-run home run. The next batter was walked and with two outs, the winning run was scored off a double.

John Timmins took the loss on the mound, pitching the final two-thirds inning in allowing two runs on three hits, including the game-winning home run. Nick Vanthillo started the contest and went six innings in scattering four hits, one run and walking three. Grant Piccoli pitched three innings in giving up six runs on four hits and walking five.

WNCC will return to action Tuesday when they will face Seminole State Community College in Phoenix.
