Zephyrs get walk-off win against North Platte

Joe Moran tripled and Eric Moreno followed with a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth to lift the WESTCO Zephyrs to a 5-4 win over North Platte in a first round game at the Area 7 Senior Legion Baseball Tournament in Hastings Friday night.

The ninth inning success capped a second come-from-behind effort for Mark Moran's crew and moved them into a second round game against top seeded Kearney who topped host Hastings in the night cap at Duncan Field.

It was a scoreless game between the 36-19 Zephyrs and North Platte through the third inning. North Platte then scored a single run in the fourth, but the Zephyrs took the lead with a two spot in the bottom half of the inning.

North Platte responded with a three-run fifth. The Zephyrs got one run back in the bottom half of the inning, then tied the game iwth a single run in the seventh.

Joe Sanchez worked into the fifth inning of the game before being relieved by Moreno. Moreno pitched three-hit ball over the final five innings, surrendering two unearned runs while striking out eight. Along with his game winning sacrifice fly Moreno added one other rbi. Moran added a double to his triple and scored two runs.

WESTCO and Kearney will play at 5:00 p.m. CT Saturday. With the win Friday it appears the Zephyrs have qualified for one of the two Class A state tournaments for a second season in a row. Kearney is host for one tournament. Omaha Burke is the second site.
