Hadden carries Cats past Cheyenne East

Hot shooting by Scottsbluff had the Cats sitting in the halftime lockerroom leading Cheyenne East 44-26 Friday night before a near full house at SHS. But the visitors warmed up in the third quarter to make a game of it before Scottsbluff pulled out a 71-68 win.

The Thunderbirds hit 10-of-11 third quarter shots while outscoring the Bearcats 22-to-13 to cut the margin in half going into the fourth quarter.

The visitors continued to chip away, cutting the deficit down to a single point on two occasions. But Scottsbluff's Michael Hadden responded. The senior led the Cats with 34 points, scoring 13 of the teams 14 fourth quarter points.

"Michael did a great job," head coach Tony Siske said after the game. "When things are on the line he takes charge."

Siske was also pleased with a number of other younger players as well, including freshman Dillon Hernandez. He came off the bench to crank in two-three point field goals in the second quarter. He also handled the ball well at the end of the game.

"He is a heady ballplayer," Siske said. "He doesn't make many mistakes and he did a great job of getting the ball to Hadden."

Sophomore Jackson Hinze also came up with an 11-point game, while senior Tyler Mickey started and scored nine.

The Bearcats were playing shorthanded as normal starters Eric Moreno and Taylor Winkler and top reserve Beau Lofink, who broke his nose in practice Wednesday were suspended for the game for disciplinary reasons.

"We played well together as a team," Siske said afterwards. "We have to continue to play as a team and move forward."

They will move forward with a Saturday game at Cheyenne Central. The Scottsbluff girls game at Central was cancelled Friday.

The boys team will head west with an 11-2 record. East dropped to 3-9 on the season. They had three double figure scorers Friday, led by Ryan Cook with 21.

The Scottsbluff junior varsity overcame a halftime deficit and won their game over East 72-to-64.
